Churchill College, which officially opened in 1964 and was completed in 1969, is the national and Commonwealth memorial to Britain’s great wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, who was very involved in its development before his death in 1965. He had been impressed by his visit to the US college, MIT, and wanted Britain to have an equivalent: a university devoted to mathematics, science and technology to advance and benefit wider society. Unlike its Gothic and neo-Classical neighbours, the college is a leading example of the Brutalist architecture of the period, which was the ultimate in British Modernism at the time. It is home to the entire Churchill archive, and – at 42 acres – has the largest campus in Cambridge. Notably, it was the first men’s college to admit female students.
