Founded in 1800, Downing is often described as the "oldest of the new and the newest of the old", as it was the only college to be added to university between 1596 and 1869. Downing was founded through the will of Sir George Downing, who died without heirs and instructed that his estates should be used to found a college called Downing. The original purpose of the college was to encourage the study of law and medicine, today however students are able to study all subjects offered by the university.
The original buildings, designed by the architect William Wilkins, are in the neo-classical architectural style. More recent additions to our site include the Maitland Robinson Library and the Howard Theatre.
Downing is opposite University Arms on Regent Street.
