An evening of ideas, stories, and quiet wonder
Ideas in Bloom is a free, informal evening series hosted in the Library at University Arms, Cambridge, where PhD researchers and recent graduates share the thinking behind their theses and research in an accessible and engaging way. At University Arms, we believe knowledge should be shared, not guarded. These evenings are rooted in a simple idea: bringing education beyond the walls of academia and into a welcoming social space. Rather than formal lectures, Ideas in Bloom celebrates curiosity, conversation, and the joy of discovery. Guests are invited to listen, ask questions, and explore new perspectives over drinks, in an elegant yet relaxed setting that reflects the spirit of Cambridge itself. It’s where the pursuit of happiness meets the imbibing of knowledge. Where ideas are enjoyed as naturally as a good drink. Where you leave knowing just a little more than when you arrived. No prior expertise required, only curiosity.
Each evening unfolds in three simple parts: The Talk (20–30 minutes) An accessible, story-led introduction to the speaker’s research, thoughtful, engaging, and free from academic jargon. The focus is not only on what they study, but why it matters. Open Conversation (20–30 minutes) An audience-led discussion where questions are welcomed, and curiosity is encouraged. No question is too simple; this is a space for shared exploration. Stay & Connect Afterwards, guests are invited to continue the conversation informally over drinks in the Library. Some of the most interesting exchanges happen long after the talk has ended.
Ideas in Bloom reflects the spirit of Cambridge, a city shaped by inquiry, debate, and discovery. By opening our Library to researchers and the wider community, we create a bridge between academia and everyday life. A place where locals, travellers, scholars, and the simply curious can gather under one roof. It is our way of honouring the intellectual heritage of University Arms while keeping it alive, present, and shared.
