Saffron Grange is one of East Anglia’s best kept secrets. A family-run vineyard nestled on the gentle sloping chalk hills just outside of Saffron Walden, it produces delicious, premium quality English Sparkling Wines. Since opening in 2019 it has been quietly racking up the awards.
Location & land
Saffron Grange is based just outside of the beautiful market town of Saffron Walden on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Essex. The area sits on the same chalk seam that runs all the way from Northern France’s renowned wine regions, up through Sussex towards Cambridge. With the lowest rainfall levels in the UK, Essex and East Anglia’s dry climate are gaining a real reputation for the ripeness and quality for their grapes and Saffron Grange is excited to be part of it.
Our method
All Saffron Grange’s sparkling wines are produced using what is called ‘the traditional method’ – also popularly known as the ‘Champagne method’. This method of winemaking creates wines with a greater complexity of flavours, and the vineyard’s two latest releases the Classic Cuvée and Pinot Noir Rosé are both currently available to drink at the University Arms.
Tours & Tastings
The vineyard hosts regular tours and tastings throughout the growing season from May to September before October’s harvest. They are the perfect opportunity to learn more about the passion, knowledge and expertise that goes into growing the grapes that the award-winning wines so special. Enjoy a pleasant amble through the vineyard, take in the surrounding views of the Essex countryside and finish off by sitting back and savouring the vineyard’s latest releases of premium quality sparkling wines with a guided tasting. The format is relaxed and informal but educational and our aim is for you to leave having had a memorable experience and armed with a better understanding of what goes into each glass of Saffron Grange.
