For many visitors, Cambridge’s choral tradition is as memorable as its colleges, punting, and medieval courtyards. The city’s chapel choirs are among the finest in the world, and hearing Choral Evensong inside candlelit gothic chapels is one of the most atmospheric experiences you can have. If you are staying at University Arms Hotel you are perfectly positioned as nearly all of the major college chapels are within a short 10–20 minute walk.
What is Cambridge Evensong?
Choral Evensong is an Anglican evening service built around sung psalms, canticles, prayers, and an anthem. Even if you are not religious, the musical and architectural experience is extraordinary. Many visitors attend simply for the music and atmosphere.
Unlike formal concerts, Evensong is usually free. You sit within centuries old chapels while world class choirs sing renaissance and contemporary sacred music in near-perfect acoustics. Services typically last 40–60 minutes and the strongest choirs belong to Cambridge colleges including King’s, St John’s, Trinity, Clare, Jesus, and Selwyn.
The Essential Experience: King’s College Chapel
The most famous evensong in Cambridge takes place at King's College Chapel. The chapel itself is one of the greatest examples of perpendicular gothic architecture in Europe and is instantly recognisable from its immense fan vaulted ceiling and stained glass.
The choir became internationally famous through the annual Christmas broadcast but the regular weekday evensongs are often even more rewarding because they are intimate and less crowded.
Services usually take place six days a week during university term time (the chapel is closed on Mondays). Weekend services tend to be more ceremonial, while weekday services feel contemplative and meditative.
The best time to attend evensong at Kings College is usually during university term time, especially on a weekday evening in autumn or winter. Just imagine the college choirs are in full swing, the chapels are candlelit or dusky, and you can bask in the full Cambridge experience. Ordinary services rarely require queueing, though arriving 15–20 minutes early is sensible and from University Arms Hotel to King's College Chapel is approximately 12–15 minutes on foot.
St Johns Evensong
Many visitors quietly prefer St John's College chapel for evensong. The acoustics are magnificent, the choir is exceptional, and the atmosphere is slightly less tourist heavy than King’s College. The Choir of St John’s sings choral evensong six days a week during term, generally at 6:30pm. The chapel itself, designed by George Gilbert Scott, is dramatic and richly Victorian. If King’s feels grand and iconic, St John’s often feels more immersive and intimate. University Arms Hotel to St Johns is approximately 15–18 minutes on foot.
Trinity College Evensong
Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge offers one of the most traditional evensong experiences in the city. Services generally occur on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays during term time. Trinity’s musical tradition is refined rather than theatrical and the chapel itself feels deeply scholarly, exactly the Cambridge many visitors imagine before arriving. Expecta traditional Anglican liturgy, smaller congregations and beautiful candlelit services. University Arms Hotel to Trinity College is approximately 15 minutes on foot.
If you are in Cambridge for only one evening we recommend King’s College for the most famous and iconic experience. However If you are staying two or three nights try to visit two or three as the contrast between chapels becomes part of the experience.
Concerts and Choral Performances Beyond Evensong
Beyond evensong Cambridge has a remarkably active sacred and classical music scene where you can enjoy concerts and other choral performances.
Situated only a few minutes walk away from the famous Cambridge backs and King’s College you will find West Road Concert Hall. This is Cambridge’s principal classical music venue regularly hosting Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra as well as swing and jazz performances. It is renowned for its superb acoustic qualities and at roughly 20 minutes walk from University Arms and close to several colleges it is certainly worth a visit.
If you have an extra afternoon or evening spare in your Cambridge itinerary a wonderful nearby excursion is Ely Cathedral, only a 15 minute train ride away. Ely Cathedral is one of the great English cathedrals, and its choral evensong is widely considered among the finest cathedral experiences in the country. Offering daily evensong year round, ideal for if you are visiting Cambridge outside of term time. Sit, listen and absorb the sound of the vast acoustics under the famous octagon tower and revel in the contrast between intimate music and huge medieval architecture.
