Cambridge Early Music’s 2026 Baroque Summer School presents Purcell’s semi-opera Dioclesian, conducted by Laurence Cummings and choreographed by Mary Collins and Kath Waters. First performed in 1690, it tells the story of Diocles, a Roman foot soldier destined to become emperor after slaying a mighty boar. The work reflects the universal conflict between love and duty, while examining prophecy’s power and the corrupting influence of ambition and human desire for greatness and fate it endures.
