What makes a painting beautiful?

Join us in the library at 7pm on Wednesday 9th February, when guests can meet Charlie Hart who discusses the question, what makes a painting beautiful?

As an art dealer Charlie has both a personal and professional interest in this question. He will discuss human evolution and the landscape, pick through the debate that raged around impressionism towards the end of the nineteenth century, consider painting in the context of faith and ultimately share his own personal observations about why he thinks he responds to some paintings with awe. Plato’s Cave and Keat's Ode on a Grecian Urn will both get a look in. A timeless question that strikes at the very heart of what it might mean to be human. You will be relived to hear, Charlie will not attempt a definitive answer on the night, but rather share clues he has found whilst picking through the human record.
