University Arms welcomes painter Will Topley to be our first Artist-in-Residence during our art pop-up, “In the Frame”

How does someone who’s usually in planes, trains and automobiles, setting up a portable studio “en plein air” or in his patrons’ houses around the world, manage the confinement of lockdown? “This year’s destination was found at home,” says artist Will Topley, “looking inwards through the quiet contemplation of still lives.” Fortunately for us, there’s only so many arrangements of fruit a man can take, and we’re delighted that Will is joining us at our debut art pop-up, “In the Frame” on the 26th and 27th of August.

“I’m thrilled to be coming to Cambridge for this exciting event, where I shall be painting pictures indoors and outdoors,” Will enthuses. Known for his portraits of interiors, people and landscapes, this alumnus of the famous Slade School of Art has not only taken part in many group and solo exhibitions in London and abroad, he also taught Art at St Marys School, Calne for 10 years; has been a member of the Faculty at the Royal Drawing School, London, for more than 20; and tutors private students internationally. “My true passion is painting directly from observation,” Will says, “as this always comes back to drawing.”
