Alan Turing loved to run. The British war hero responsible for helping crack the ‘Enigma’ code once explained, “I have such a stressful job that the only way I can get it out of my mind is by running hard; it’s the only way I can get some release.” Turing might even have run for Great Britain in the 1948 London Olympics had an injury not prevented him training. A fellow of King’s College from 1935, Turing often ran the 15 miles to Ely.

This picturesque cathedral city is still popular with Cambridge daytrippers, who travel to see the attractive seventh-century and the family home of — now a public museum. Trains from Cambridge to Ely take around 15 minutes, and run frequently. By car the trip takes around 40 minutes.
