Sumptuous Martin Brudnizki interiors (he’s the brains behind the famous pink Murano-glass-adorned loo in Annabel’s), a well-placed location and a fabulously flashy cocktail bar make the recently revamped the smartest place to stay in the city. Literature lovers will enjoy the Woolf suite, its shelves stuffed with Virginia’s novels, its high windows overlooking Parker’s Piece. With beds this comfortable you could lounge till lunch, but resist the urge and borrow the hotel’s “Cambridge blue”-hued bikes for a cycle to Grantchester and a swim in the river. What’s that? The Guardian’s killed wild swimming? Luxuriate in the bath, then – the hotel’s 192 rooms boast truly the loveliest bathrooms, the most spectacular of which can be found in the turret attached to room 907.
